    The targeting for Operation Epic Fury ran on a system called Maven. Nobody was arguing about Maven.

    Eight years ago, Maven was the most contested project in Silicon Valley. In 2018, more than 4,000 Google employees signed a letter opposing the company’s contract to build artificial intelligence for the Pentagon’s targeting systems. Workers organised a walk out. Engineers quit. And Google ultimately abandoned the contract. Palantir Technologies, a data analytics company and defence contractor co-founded by Peter Thiel, took it over and spent the next six years building Maven into a targeting infrastructure that pulls together satellite imagery, signals intelligence and sensor data to identify targets and carry them through every step from first detection to the order to strike.

    To me, it’s the fault of the USB-C standard that people don’t think about plugging phones into displays. Because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

    When I first got a USB-C to HDMI adapter, you bet I tried plugging my phone into an HDMI display, but it didn’t do anything at all.

    When you connect a display to a device using just HDMI you know that it is supposed to work, it is designed to work.

    In many regions, you can get an older Macbook Air (M2 or M1) refurbished for the same price as the Neo, sometimes less! If you are able to score one of those, then the Neo should be out of the question for you.

    If anyone has a head-to-head comparison I would love to see it because I am wondering about how the specs compare, especially:

    • Expected battery life of a new Neo versus a used MacBook Air.
    • Comparison of the older display to the newer display.
    • Just how much slower is the Neo compared to the older MacBook Air?
    • How long you could use it before you are not getting security updates anymore.

    Not sure what is worse:

    1. The political fight re: should the OS store your age at all. (Linux will be illegal because they didn’t bend).
    2. The political fight re: should OSes be required to verify your age / identity?

    To me, fighting at step 1 has the advantage of keeping the infrastructure from getting built, and the disadvantage of people saying “well, actually, there’s nothing concerning or new here.”

    Fighting at step 2 has the advantage of being a clearer threat, but a disadvantage since the prior infrastructure has been built, society has adapted it, and politicians say “think of the children.”

    I feel like it is more strategic to fight at every step.
