Why? Why do people constantly claim that the only way to generate baseline power is by releasing fossil fuels and burning things?

101·1 month agowe should instead ban advertising
This is the solution. If companies cannot profit off of their platforms, they will not have them any longer. Literally just ban all advertising. Amend all free-speech laws in all countries to define speech as rights of individual citizens, with corporations explicitly excluded.

232·2 months agoThe dinner looks pretty mundane to me. I get it, a well-connected socialite arranged a dinner with some high-profile tech-bros, but so what? Seems like a bunch of Capitalists, doing capitalism.
It’s even more innocuous, this seems to be a social dinner with spouses etc. Basically the kind of thing that happens eery week in NYC or SF.

Linux@lemmy.ml•The GPU, not the TPM, is the root of hardware DRMEnglish
4·3 months agoyea, ever since TPM was first making the conspiracy rounds in the 90’s there has been a huge misunderstanding of its purpose, let alone its capabilities. I 100% agree with the author that looking at the TPM as an evil blackbox is really just depriving users of a tool that can be implemented in an open source way to secure user privacy. The GPU however is impossible to implement in an opensource way by everyone except a small handful of semiconductor companies, and even then you would rely on proprietary microcode that woul take millions of manhours to reverse engineer if it were even possible. So if I were some megacorp who relied on Imaginary Property, the GPU that was exclusively created by a fellow megacorp is where I’d place my trust.
I also dont know why Win11 requires a tpm2.0, but since it does, and my current computer doesnt have one, I’m certanly not going to run it.
What use is the metadata? Or is that stuff like the album covers etc?
I’m also a bit concerned about this:
Second, there’s an obsession with audiophile-grade quality (lossless FLAC, etc.) that inflates file sizes, making it impossible to maintain a complete archive of all music ever produced.
Does that mean that this spotify dump is a bunch of 64kbs mp3s, or worse some kind of lossy spotify transcode?

News@lemmy.world•Trump's energy secretary wants to bigfoot tribes' stewardship of their landEnglish
12·4 months agoThe common topological targets of eminent domain are problematic and obviously someone like Robert Moses was giving extreme reverence to the rich. But regardless of who was damaged by his eminent domain details, the value that it added for everyone was enormously positive, and would have been even greater were he not a racist. I’m specifically talking about his parks and railroads as detailed in the Power Broker.
The legal method he was able to leverage to build infrastructure should be excercised more broadly vs land-trusts, and holding companies like america’s ancient rail barons. Though you don’t even need to go that far. Just use it to reclaim abandoned rail-lines + RoW. Yes it’s a payout to the railroad’s, but it’s an enormous resource through the heart of many cities. National rail expansion merged with amtrack? new parks, bike trails, etc etc. It could be used to revitalize the very neighborhoods that were most hurt by past abuses.

News@lemmy.world•Trump's energy secretary wants to bigfoot tribes' stewardship of their landEnglish
210·4 months agoEh. People living somewhere shouldn’t be a burden for infrastructure and eminent domain should be used much more commonly for building things like passenger rail. That said Pumped Hydro, and hydro electricity have huge ecological footprints and really shouldn’t be used anymore. I can only assume that they reason they wanted to build it was some perverse incentive created by the Biden or Obama administration.

Technology@lemmy.ml•Did Cloudflare just bring down half of the Internet?English
2·5 months agoCloudflare is in an interesting space. They are a service provider (ddos protection, scalable edge caching, SSL termination, etc) that allows the highly centralized internet to function. However they aren’t a gatekeeper at all. You only need cloudflare if you are in the top 5% of internet websites by volume. So when cloudflare has a problem, Lemmy isn’t affected, but Reddit is. My blog isn’t affected, but someone like https://blog.ipspace.net/ is affected.
My personal browsing habbits meant I didn’t even realize there was a cloudflare problem until I read an article about it on Lemmy. Anyway, just a tangent, but as a network engineer I’m sure i’ll be interested in the RCA.

Technology@lemmy.world•Paul McCartney joins music industry protest against AI with silent trackEnglish
12·5 months agoMaybe we will lose low effort artists but gain great music by passionate people.
You’ll never be able to find it or hear it though. The barrier to entry for AI music is so low, even lower then the “low-effort” artist you are deriding, that typical streaming sites will be inundated by it and nothing else will be found. The algorithm™ already prefers low-royalty music, and AI music will certainly have the lowest costs to play.
Maybe there is a better electricity mix that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels “just in case.”
