Damn, is it bugging you that much? Those spinner annimations really are made to look like that (with only three dots being filled at a time). I’m guessing it would be a bit hard to change those animations. You could maybe change the characters the programs use for the animation, but that could mess with the correct rendering of certain programs in the terminal. You could also change that in the source code of the programs you use, but that would require you to find where the change must be done and recompile for every program you use.

While we’re at it, could you do a drawing of how you think the animation should look like?

You say that Mullvad is heavily shilled, and I’d like to learn more about it. Would you mind showing a concrete example, so I can better inform myself?

Please be careful when using Windows 10, because any security vulnerabilities envolving Windows itself will not be fixed, and your computer will be more vulnerable to attacks. I’m not saying this to scare you off, but to advise you to take extra precaution and to remind you that most computer security experts do not recommend using and connecting to the Internet systems that will get no further security updates. I’m no expert myself, but I’m pretty sure that things like making sure you web browser is always updated, being careful with the programs you choose to download, and using updated antivirus software are the most common tips for this kind of situation. You might want to do more your research on this topic yourself if you haven’t yet. Stay safe!

I’m glad that someone is finally trying to prosecute XAI for their crimes! Making a product that allows anyone to make deepfake porn and other types of also bad deepfakes, and proceding to do nothing about those cases, should be, in my books, extremely illegal, and I’m pretty sure that’s also illegal in the legal framework of most European countries.

Fair point. I just assumed most people reading my message wouldn’t care much about torrenting, but in this economy where censorship is pretty much happening, port forwarding would definitely be a plus. Do you have better suggestions?

If you live in the UK or in another country where porn is being restricted:

• Talk with friends and family about getting a VPN (EDIT: Some recommendations I’ve heard are Air VPN, Private Internet Access, and, despite not having port forwarding, which is essentially one less major feature, Mullvad VPN. A thank-you to @jmf@lemmy.dbzer0.com for suggesting the former two.)
• Learn to use the Tor network (it’s really easy to start, and unlike popular belief, Tor isn’t only for illegal activities)
• Pressure MPs that didn’t vote in favor of the age verification bill by sending emails to them about it so that they fight (or keep fighting) this age verification nonsense.

You don’t need to be a porn addict to do these things. In fact, they have started with porn, but they may as well keep going and fight for age verification in other types of content, making access to said content way more difficult. The best thing you can do right now is to learn to fight back.

That isn’t a bad language. It’s pretty simple and it serves a cool purpose, which is to convey the power of a Turing machine. Now this is a bad programming language.

I would suggest using methods other than platforms to find events, as there are lots of people that don’t use them. In fact, where I live, I’ve never seen people using that kind of platforms. I guess this can be different for you, but I think you should at least consider other methods of spreading the word, to guarantee that some people don’t miss the event just because they never heard of it. Here are some.

1. Printing posters and placing them in visible places. It might sound a little old-fashioned, but it gets the job done, especially for local stuff. When doing posters, you have two things to worry about. The first one is what you will write in the posters. You of course have to clearly state what you want to do (“Let’s start a Linux User Group in our town!”), but you also have got to explain what you were thinking the group could/should do (for example “Let’s organize monthly instalation parties”, or “Meetings every two weeks”, or whatever you thought about doing). That doesn’t mean that the LUG must do exactly everything you write in the poster. It’s just to give an idea of whether the LUG’s activities will be of any interest to who’s thinking of applying to it. Put some contact information on the poster. It would be interesting if you decided to organize a gathering with people that would like to be founding members of the LUG, just to figure things out. If you decide to do that, don’t forget to put the meeting’s date and place in the poster. The poster should be eye-catching and have all information clearly visible, while highlighting the most important information. If graphic design isn’t your passion, ask someone you know for help. The second thing you should worry about when doing posters is where to place them. As far as I know, only nerdy people would join an LUG. As such, you should put most posters in places where lots of nerds gather together, such as places where people gather to play board games and tabletop RPGs, electronics stores, … Even then, you could try putting them in places that are more general and have more visibility. For example, I’ve seen some supermarkets with boards for event announcements. Just don’t forget to ask for permission to put the posters whenever you want to do it in a place that isn’t the street. As long you explain what you’re promoting and say it’s non-profit, most places will allow it.
2. Advertising on forums/social media groups related to either Linux or to the place you live in. Much of the advice I gave about posters applies. In places where you know you won’t really be checking constantly for new messages, you might want to redirect people to your contact info (say something like “If you want to contact me, instead of sending me a message through this platform, please use my contact info”). Also make sure to follow the rules of the places, and contact the admins if you have questions. I don’t have much experience with this approach, so I can’t give much advice.
3. Asking Linux users you know to promote it. Word of mouth is always useful ;)

For anyone wondering:

1. There was a plugin on Unity Store that acted a bridge between Unity and libVLC, which allowed developers to make video players inside the game engine. As the post says, it got removed.
2. This plugin isn’t made by VideoLAN, it’s made by a company named Videolabs that includes several people who supposedly have contributed a lot on VLC and FFMPEG.
