Thanks again, everybody that voted! If you want to check out the anonymized ballot information and inspect the code I used to process the votes, you can find a repository I made here.

Total turnout this year (~25 votes) was down quite a bit compared to last year (~90 votes). I think there were a couple contributing factors to this:

    • The private-message voting system was new, and I don’t think it seems like it was popular. Last year I had run a survey site that lets people fill out a web form for their vote. However, the software was really flaky on the backend side of things and I didn’t want to run it again. Also, there was not really any way to prevent somebody from voting multiple times because I couldn’t tie a vote to a user account.
    • Last year’s voting period happened over the holidays, and I suspect that boosted turnout.
    • I think total overall activity is down compared to a year ago, especially so since we are in the middle of a season. The active user count always tends to tick up when a new season kicks off, but then falls back down a bit to coast until the next season sees another bit of a spike. So, doing these awards in the middle of a season probably didn’t help turnout.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any ideas for improvement in the future. Whether that is about the voting process, nomination process, timing, whatever…

As for the award winners, there were a couple titles that really soaked up lots of votes in any category they were nominated for. Specifically, CITY, Apocalypse Hotel, and Chainsaw Man - Reze Arc got a huge portion of the voteshare whenever they were nominated. So, if there is any takeaway from these awards for me, it’s that those are this community’s standout favorites from last year.

    Other interesting things I noticed:

    • I was glad to see Ninkoro doing so well in the Best Comedy category. I loved the dark humor in that series so much, and the anime really elevated the source material in lots of ways. Glad to see others agreed!
    • I was also happy to see Rock is a Lady’s Modesty do well in the OST category. It’s always nice when an anime about music actually has good music in it.
    • I found it interesting that Maomao absolutely ran away with the voting for best Voice Acting, but she didn’t even make the nomination list for best character. In fact, Shisui received more nominations than Maomao for best character.

  • Man, academic labs/shops are something else. Having worked in corporate labs now for over a decade, I look back on the “safety” training I got from the postdocs and older grad students at the time and can’t help but feel it’s a miracle more grad students don’t fall prey to accidents.

I was in a physics program and I think a big part of it is that people didn’t understand stuff outside their field. I did get lots of proper training on laser safety before I worked in our laser room. However, I think that is because the people training me are the ones that actually built the laser and understood it. Often, when I needed to fabricate a part, I was pointed to the right piece of equipment, but then never really trained on it and left to kind of figure it out (so many hours on an end mill messing things up).

    FAQ Time!

Why limit the number of nominees in each category?

As you might be able to tell, I capped the number of nominees in each category to six. Going through all the nominations, this seemed like a reasonable tradeoff between the amount of work I needed to do while still capturing entries that were nominated the most often. Going beyond 6 entries basically meant that for most categories, I was having to choose from a long list of potential titles that were only nominated by a single person. For example, there were 42 distinct songs nominated in the musical sequence category. However, the vast majority of those were nominated by just one person. It is frankly too much work on my part to try to jury or tally votes for that many nominees.

Why is X series in Y category?

Well, because it was nominated there. I didn’t impose any kind of limits this year on how many categories a title could appear in. Instead, it was purely based on your nominations. If there were any that were obviously wrong (like Orb in Comedy or something), I would have intervened, but that didn’t happen at all.

    Voting methodology?

Ranked choice voting! You will submit your ballot and order the nominees that you want to vote for (or delete ones you don’t want to vote for) in order of preference within each category. Then I will process the ballots and run an RCV election in each category. I don’t yet have the code written to do this, but will soon.

How long will voting stay open?

Probably a bit over a week or so? I don’t have a set end time yet and it kind of depends on my irl workload. It probably won’t extend much past March 1st if at all.

Happy to answer any additional questions you might have in the comments!
