I have heard that systemd is “heavier” than alternatives. I haven’t experienced that. I don’t think gaming is impacted at all.

I use openrc on Gentoo for desktop. It requires some script hooks for things that expect systemd, but works quite well. I don’t pay attention to it much, unless I’m writing an init script.

Bootloaders are locked. Think of the bios on a PC.

I just followed the handbook honestly. There’s one for ARM devices, but it’s not really necessary.

It took a LONG time to compile everything, so I don’t recommend it to those wanting a simple solution.

As for gaming? Who knows. We use the device for quick looking up of info, recipes (it stays in the kitchen), email, maybe a document or two.

Yes, the source code gets compiled directly on the machine (or indirectly FOR the machine).

This, of course, assumes one can actually boot a kernel not developed specifically for the machine.

Some modern boot loaders / managers are locked (Asus does this a lot), so you’re stuck with whatever they put on the machine.

Gentoo supports ARM quite well (obviously), but I’m not sure what new hardware is out there that has an open enough firmware (or that can be flashed with coreboot) that will allow a Linux install.

Unfortunately all the carriers here (California - at least) have shut down their 3G networks.
