Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace are what a friend and I agreed is the perfect breakup music. I think it came up because it made me feel better during a breakup but I didn’t want to continue listening to it to avoid getting sick of it and it losing the effect next time. Elevator walker here. This is the first I’m hearing of it! Given that it’s not a thing being played or said in various European countries, where do they have this on repeat? Where did you hear it was bad for it? Any idea why bigger cities generally have markings on the sides of escalators to designate which side to stand, and which side to walk on, since that would only promote the bad-for-their-infrastructure behavior?

Edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escalator_etiquette doesn’t mention anything about damaging the escalator. Walking along increases your chances of falling or something though. In Hong Kong they apparently measured 43% of accidents stemming from “moving or walking along”. Methinks a stationary bicycle rarely crashes… I’ll take my chances. Can’t be that bad if 57% of accidents stems from the people who just stand there. I’ve never met anyone who was in an escalator accident whereas most people who drive have a traffic accident at some point in their lives and loads of near-misses, so the escalator accident odds must be much lower than that, as well as the speed and consequences involved in escalator accidents, I’d assume

Age of Empires 1 is old enough, but does one “use” it?

It’s got a unique co-op feature where you actally control the same people and can divide tasks (not like other RTS where you can play in a team but still need to do everything yourself, with any resource sharing being a manual (or even taxed) action in a menu somewhere), so my gf and I are sticking with this game. I think it’s the only game we’ve been playing consistently for our 10 years together. Crap, did I say playing? I meant using! It’s a relationship tool. Try it today! xD

I let them know that I was cool with transcription software being used as long as it was installed locally on their machines, but I did not want a third party online app having access to recorded sessions for the purposes of transcription. They didn’t take issue with it.

A cynical part in me thinks they’ll just have it “locally installed” in the same way that Firefox is locally installed (doesn’t mean the meaningful part runs locally), and that no third party has access because the servers just don’t show stuff from other tenants even though the server operator could theoretically see all. It’s not like the medical people necessarily know better if their vendor answered the concerns in this manner

One way to find out for lay people might be to turn off WiFi, or disconnect the network cable, and see if it still works — in case you’re in a position where the doc might seem willing to do such a 30-second experiment (if they haven’t already tried this in the past themselves). Doesn’t mean it doesn’t get uploaded when internet is reconnected (e.g. for backups), but that is much harder to check, and if the vendor already made sure the processing is all local then it’s probably okay and not being sold off as training or insurance data

Kudos for reading the terms of service and raising your concerns with them! So long as some of us keep doing that, the privacy of people who don’t know about this sort of thing is also better-protected. Thank you :)

Germans might appreciate Bahn Vorhersage. It’s not magic, it won’t know when your train will actually be there, but it helps planning trips on unfamiliar routes by giving you a much better idea of how much buffer time to plan. I recently rediscovered UsageDirect for seeing how much time I spend in different apps. It’s not really focused on this “spend less time on your phone” thing (you’re old enough to decide that for yourself), it just shows you data that Android already collects anyway — and I love data! https://f-droid.org/packages/godau.fynn.usagedirect

Be sure you didn’t miss @jtrek@startrek.website’s Too Good To Go recommendation downthread. It’s about as commercial and nonfoss as it gets, but the end result is cheap food that would otherwise have been thrown away (I sometimes ask the store people what happens with the rest, only rarely is there some partial collaboration with a food bank type of place). Used to simply be a website to match people and restaurants iirc when I used it in Finland; now it requires an american credit card and anti-fraud algorithms magic to get anything but… still worth it

How can you test drive a stick shift without knowing how to drive one? Didn’t you have a driver’s license?

I have no idea besides that was a stick shift with 4 wheels. Is this something people normally care about?

Depends what you’re interested in…

Lacking that information, how I went about it:

• advertise that you have Mastodon so people can follow you
• I knew two persons so I followed them and see who they boost and @mention
• I browsed the local and the federated timelines
• for every particularly interesting post or mention (raise the bar as you follow more people), check out the profile that posted it and whether you’re interested in following them
• click on hashtags that sound interesting and repeat the previous step
• look for some common (nick/short)names of your city/area/country as hashtag and check if anyone uses that already. Might be worth following (you can follow hashtags, not just people). I find that it’s relatively low quality, but any high quality local posts are often quite useful, so…
• don’t be afraid to unfollow if a profile turns out to be less interesting than expected!

Not a one-day process of course, but pretty quickly I got my timeline fuller than the amount of time I want to spend browsing microblogs. From there I’ve mostly been looking at profiles that show up via boosts, very rarely looking at the general pool (the server’s timeline) anymore

Once beyond that initial stage, I might recommend having a “list” (the Mastodon feature) where you add people of whom you want to see every post. For me, that’s direct friends, a weekly comic I enjoy, and some people who don’t post much but whose posts are nearly always worth seeing. Iirc the default behavior is that people in lists are hidden from your main timeline but you can disabled that

Tusky is the client I use. The first tab is general timeline, second tab is my “see all posts” list, third is inbox, then a hashtag I follow, then bookmarks, and that’s it. Works really well for me. Hope you find (some of) this setup useful as well!

We seem to expect worse of others than of ourselves. Even if it turns out to be that 40% ends up stopping to do anything remotely useful, it’s at least worth trying and finding out what works and what doesn’t imo. Having the right to choose how to live your life freely seems like an enormous benefit that a minority needn’t ruin

We have a realistic minimum wage, but not everything that needs doing generates enough income to pay it. Taking care of your elderly mother as the simplest example but also firefighting apparently. It regularly blows my mind how much is done by volunteers. We could do so much more if you knew life’s basics were going to be covered regardless of how you help society

I would vote for it, because it seems nice and I don’t see myself sitting still regardless, just that I’d choose more fulfilling / societally beneficial work if there weren’t this idea of needing to provide and work with market forces. But then it came up with my cousin and she said she’d do fuck all, travel, spend time horse riding or whatnot, anything but work because why bother. Less anecdotal studies show cautiously positive results (or exceedingly positive in misleading headlines until you open the study and find two sides to the coin), but afaik have so far been very limited in both scale and duration. So idk but it seems at least worth a real try. Do we always need to have strong opinions?

I’m wondering if this can be extrapolated beyond physical things like the hammers and houses you mentioned. Would a rule of thumb like “one shouldn’t be able to appropriate more resources than one can personally make use of” fit with your point of view?

E.g.: nobody should earn 3 million a year (thinking of the mozilla ceo here specifically lol, but I’m sure it’s common among big businesses), not leaving the heater on if you’re not home because (in most cases) someone else could have used that electricity or gas, selling or donating non-sentimental things you’re surely not going to use it again so that someone else can get use/value out of it, etc. As ideals to strive for of course, not necessarily all hard-and-fast rules

Saying this gift is awesome sounds like a straight-up lie, given what OP wrote about their true feeling

Weasel wording around it, like acknowledging their thoughtfulness (as you say with “appreciate that you noticed how much I use it” without mentioning the gift’s downsides) seems like a really good option and I’d leave it at that, leaving options open to later discuss what to do with the instance of this object that has sentimental value attached. Hearing that question/thought (later, when not in the middle of a gift-giving ritual), the partner presumably realises the error without needing to be told and can warm up to the idea that this new one might not be what OP would prefer to keep
