  • Vaccines cause autism and/or other major health issues for a significant portion of the population. Since vaccination rates in large parts of the world are close to 90% for important vaccines you’d be seeing large numbers of cases for whatever negative effect you think they had. E.g. if vaccines actually did cause autism, in a population where 90% are vaccinated you’d surely have more than the current ~1% of autism diagnosis.

Also the Covid vaccine killing people in large numbers. When the vaccine started rolling out a colleague told me with a straight face that the covid vaccine had already killed 1/3 of the population in Bulgaria (or maybe it was another eastern European country). She absolutely 100% believed it and said the media was covering it up.

  • A good friend in school always had really good grades. She worked hard, had mostly As and wanted to become a scientist since 5th grade, later she was mostly interested in biology and wanted to go into genetics. She graduated with really good grades, the second best student of our year, and would have probably made it into a field of her choosing. When I looked her up years later she had studied art and works at an art gallery. I’m happy for her if that’s what she wanted, but she had talked about studying biology nonstop from 5th grade to graduation.

  • I mean, neither of them are a good choice for the character. Veronique is a smart redhead who’s good with all sorts of creatures in the comics. She’s mostly the calm and diplomatic one who can talk her way out of a situation and is usually in a good mood. Casting her with a blond person that has a resting bitch face throughout the movie is the worst offence to the character. Valerian is always portrayed as a bit hotheaded and lazy but also very smart and experienced. In the movie they made him some type of hotheaded action hero when him being experienced, techsavvy and a good strategist is a big part of his character in the comics.

That being said, the sibling thing isn’t too far off. They are never portrayed as having a romantic relationship and (spoiler)

    Tap for spoiler

end up being raised together as actual siblings after being rejuvenated in the second to last comic.

  • The debate had actually been going on for a while between Fraktur and Antiqua. In the past Fraktur was used to write German, while Antiqua was used for Latin. The debate is known as the “Antiqua-Fraktur-Streit” and was going on in Germany since the 18th century. In the late 19th century it became very heated when several movements tried to make their preferred font the standard in the wake of standardizations for spelling. During the Weimar republic both were taught in schools, Antiqua for Latin and Fraktur for German.

Now you’d think someone like Hitler would love a classical German font, but Hitler found the usage of Fraktur “backward-looking” and the artsy, ornate style of Fraktur not fitting for the new age of technology and strong Aryans. They even prohibited the usage of Fraktur in some publications.

It’s actually pretty hilarious that Fraktur is associated with Nazis now when Hitler was pretty outspoken about hating it and tried very hard to abolish it.

  • I miss them, too. I was a member of a writing forum. There were maybe 30-40 very active members. You’d come to know them even if you didn’t know their real names. But you’d read from Flower123 in one post and then there was always a category for smalltalk and you’d recognize Flower123 when they wrote about being sick or their hobby. We even had regional meetings for a big poetry forums where 10/15 came to a café. There was just a feeling of being a community.

Unfortunately I am not sure if this would even work today, even if we replicated the forumstructure 1:1. People are more used to consuming media online. You can see that here in Lemmy, too. Many people complain about the lack of content, but not many post or engage. People want to consume, not take an active role in a community. The only reason reddit still kind of works, apart from the bot content, is that it has a giant, international user base so it still feels like a lot of content even if only 10% are very active.

The whole internet culture has shifted from a light-hearted playground to a consumption-based minefield. People use the internet for different reasons. It’s a huge difference if I come home from school, ask my parents to use the internet for an hour, go on that one poetry forum that is 80% of my internet activities and interact with the same 30-40 people every day or if I have the internet with me every second of the day and have an endless supply of consumable content that is enjoyable without interacting. People don’t really feel like they can/should be an active participant in the discourse anymore unless it’s by posting their own, standalone content on platforms like tiktok. And then it’s not really an interaction with other people, it’s more like everybody is yelling into nothingness.

  • I switched careers from logistics (office) to IT a couple of years ago. Logistics was notoriously badly paid and it was hard to find a job that’s not temporary for a year amd then they throw you out. Everybody kept telling us for years to go to IT, because that’s where the money and the non-temporary contracts are… But that’s only true for people who’ve worked there for decades.

It really does feel like no field is left where you can have a stable career. Accounting, sales, hospital, no matter where you ask, it’s temp contracts and shitty wages.

  • We need stricter social rules again in a lot of areas and children need to be brought up stricter again. Now I don’t mean we should get back to being in other people’s business in regards to what they wear or who they love. But let’s go back to shunning people for littering. Teach kids to sit still and be quiet in certain spaces like public transport or restaurants. Ostracize people who are loud and disruptive in public. Let’s just implement some stricter social rules again.
