1·15 days agoYeah, why go through the trouble? My analysis on him as a nordic neighbor is that he’s just some random middle-class swedish guy, that got big and tried to live like he’s regular dude instead taking responsibility for such a big influence.
A lot of the controversy seems to stem from USAians thinking he’s one of them just because he’s seen as american white, not understanding that he comes from an entirely different culture. For example I didn’t personally even grasp what a voldemort-type of a thing “n-word” is across the ocean until he did the bridge idiocy, and I doubt he understood either. There exists nothing like that in nordic cultures, we can say pretty much anything and the “forbidden words” are more just “don’t call people that”. The history of racism here is very different

0·15 days agoHe’s read and reviewed all sorts of books, but as far as I know the only questionable one of those was the first Jordan Peterson thing (which he did criticize as well), so I don’t know how a single book he’s never talked about would flag him as anything. Sure, if he actively tried to preach what’s written in it or encourage people to read that stuff, but I agree that just owning some book is a pretty poor basis for accusations.
He has the platform, so if he’s a raging racist or antisemitist, why isn’t he using that for preaching those then?

1·1 month agoAll I can think about is what the nazi concentration camp people did.
That’s just the flashy horrible stuff, it’s actually a lot worse. One horrid example is they systematically murdered disabled children even before concentration camps. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_euthanasia_in_Nazi_Germany

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some discord alternatives that we can suggest to our friends?
2·2 months agoDoes anyone have recommendations for something that has the possibility for custom emojis? So far I’ve only found Stoat enabling them, but I’m still searching if there’s anything better out there… I know slack allows them, but it’s way too expensive for casual hobby things and I’d rather have something open source.

2·2 months agoIt doesn’t have custom emoji support, which is one of the reasons Discord even got such a large userbase (a lot of people are paying for nitro only to get the general custom emoji support). Maybe some forks (or whatever the proper term is) do have that, but those seem to be hard to find and even harder to convince anyone to use

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who were some of your childhood heroes that turned out to be horrible people?
13·2 months agoJesus would probably be a cool guy
I’m an atheist but I fucking love Jesus. As an idea he represents so much good in humanity; selfless love, mercy, helping those in need, humility, even self-sacrifice for greater good. If you take him away from all the crap christianity has accumulated, there’s so much you can learn from his example. He’s even imperfect, just like all humans are
Just let people live their life how they want to
I’d rather have them not climb the damn mountain though. It’s become a sort of tourist trap -thing (literally), there’s people selling commercial climbings and all. It’s extremely wasteful and them littering the place with all their trash (like extra oxygen tanks) and then with their corpses is disgusting and kind of insulting considering Sagarmatha has some religious significance to locals as well

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever momentarily forgotten a word, so you just make one up?
3·2 months agoYep. There’s multiple layers to it as well, as you can make up compound words, and then you can do the “bending”, adding specific endings to make the word mean whatever. You don’t even really think about it, you just do it kinda naturally when needed.
For a random example today I used “ylöspäinkapuava”, “(someone/something) climbing upwards”. Ylös = up, päin = towards, ylöspäin = upwards, kavuta = to climb, kapuaa = someone/something climbs, kapuava = someone/something is climbing (adjective) -> ylöspäinkapuava. You could use “ylöskapuava” (up climbing) to make it simpler, but that leaves out some nuance and sounds more like just getting up after you fell down.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever momentarily forgotten a word, so you just make one up?
6·2 months agoYes, since in my native language creating new words is a build-in feature (I’m finnish). You don’t know what’s that called? Forgot the word? A new thing that doesn’t even have a word for it? Just slap two or more together and it’s fine
The optimal “daylight” is about 5700-5800K. It’s not blue then, but pure white.
(I know this because that’s the optimal for parrots. They also have to have UV lights as an extra though, they need that for health and to see their full spectrum)

91·2 months agoI’ve been warning people around me for years about shit like this, and have been promptly ignored or thought delusional. Who’s crazy now, huh?? I wish it wasn’t this way though, it really sucks to see all my paranoia becoming reality. What’s next, state approved, AI controlled drones hunting people on the streets based on AI risk assessment and recognition based on databases collected from stuff like assigned passports and voting records?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there some sort of app or website where I can do creative writing ?
2·2 months agoIf you like creative writing in general and want to interact with others through it, you could always look into play-by-post rpgs? There’s a whole subcultures around them online and the english speaking player base is probably the largest (and I’m talking about the free side of it, not those using dnd mechanics and such)
I’m a triple-a so it can in fact get even worse. The third being autism
