It’s not about the google vibes, it’s that this thing could be standardized and used by several programs and websites.

here’s an example. with google’s integrity system, most phones can not go through attestation. an exception is phones that can run GrapheneOS. but for apps that require attestation, the developers need to change their app so that it accepts valid attestations of systems that use the GrapheneOS key. such apps can decide to keep only accepting google approved systems.

so far it looks like this will work similarly enough that software you run will be able to be picky about what distribution you use.

discord can be used without an account - until they kick you out demanding your phone number.

on matrix too you can have a guest user that works somewhat similarly, but most rooms don’t have that enabled I think. I am not too surprised about that, no idea how could that be effectively moderated. it also needs client support but element web supports it

if you have tech skills, try running a matrix bridge for whatsapp for yourself. take it slowly if you need it, you are not in a hurry. your own server, federation off. keep using whatsapp as you did before, and check for a month or two if the bridge is running stable. subscribe to notifications for github releases of the bridge to know if there’s an important update.
you won’t be able to leave whatsapp behind, but at least you’ll be able to get rid of its apps that do whatever that’s not for your benefit
