There are tribes that refer to themselves as nations, like the Cherokee Nation for example. I don’t really know if there’s a specific meaning to “nation” vs using some other word. I used “entity” in order to try to avoid using a more nuanced word incorrectly. The tribes have sovereignty is all I meant.
I’m not really sure what Gorsuch was getting at with his question, but my understanding is that Native Americans are not citizens by the 14th amendment, because tribes are sovereign entities, and therefore fall into the “not subject to the jurisdiction” part of that amendment. However, they are granted citizenship by the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.

That’s oversimplifying it. Suppose you have a relative who has $20,000 in unpaid bills, and $5,000 in a savings account. They pass away and leave everything to you in their will. The money in the savings account is used to pay some of the bills, but the remaining $15,000 debt does not pass on to you, or anyone else. If it was the other way around ($5,000 is debt, $20,000 in savings), you’d get $15,000.
My favorite is that in the same vein, Aristarchus estimated the size of the sun to be much larger than the earth (although he still severely underestimated it because it’s so hard to measure), and therefore proposed that the earth should orbit around the sun. And the main problem with his theory was not any religious objection, but rather that his model would imply that there should be parallax visible among the stars. Unless they are, you know, ridiculously far away.
Even if nothing comes of it, it’d be better than doing nothing. Congress should do what they can, not just roll over.

Another vote for Kobo here. I have a Clara 2e that i really like. It can use Overdrive to get books from the library, or you can just load books yourself either over USB, or download documents using its built in web browser. The browser would also let you look at an online planner, I guess? There isn’t one built in. The slow screen updates make using the browser pretty impractical for the most part, though.
My guess is that the amount of sprawl in America is a big contributor. It means there’s a higher barrier to biking, which in turn means that fewer people do it, which then means that there’s less effort put into biking infrastructure (and the sprawl also directly makes building infrastructure more expensive), and so then the people who do bike have to be more intrusive on other traffic. So then there’s tension between the drivers who end up inconvenienced by bikers, and bikers who feel threatened by drivers.
If you’re going 1/4 of the speed limit and there’s no biking infrastructure, please stay off the road. I’ll probably get hate for it, but blame the state for not providing safe infrastructure for cyclist.
This goes both ways. If there’s no biking infrastructure, maybe its you who should blame the state for needing to go around or stay behind the cyclist. The road is theirs as much as it is yours.
Certainly the relationship between the US government and Native American tribes is… well, obviously “complicated” is a gross understatement. But the Supreme Court found in Elk v. Wilkins that Native Americans born on Indian reservations were not citizens because they are not subject to US jurisdiction. Hence the Indian Citizenship Act. Native Americans pay federal taxes because they are US citizens.
