  • Yeah the honest answer is there is no single “American education system”. Primary education is splintered into thousands of different counties, each with their own curriculum and funding, with varying degrees of state and national oversight. Some are good, some are terrible. My public school education was pretty solid overall, despite the clear shortage of funding.

On the other hand, despite rising costs, the US university system is still world-class.

  • Stopping climate change is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE harder than protecting the ozone layer. Protecting ozone requires switching the chemicals we used in refrigerants and propellants to other, viable alternatives. That affected products worth, generously, maybe 1% of GDP?

Stopping climate changing the vast majority of the vehicles on the planet, along with the majority of our electrical power plants. It also necessitates stopping deforestation and overhauling a wide number of industrial processes, including for basic materials like steel and concrete. And that’s not even getting into methane emissions from livestock.

All of these things add up to a massive chunk of the planets GDP. It’s an extremely heavy lift, and it’s not fair to say that the world has gotten worse because we’re struggling more with climate change than the ozone hole.

  • Yeah it absolutely would benefit from a wider range of opinions. That’s why a large portion of my comments are “against the grain”, I don’t see the value of reinforcing prevailing opinions in an echo chamber. I hope that as Lemmy grows we will see more diverse opinions, but what I think is more likely is that the hard-core leftist part of Lemmy will sort of secede and defederate so they can preserve their echo chamber while the rest of lemmy gets taken over by “normies”

  • You’re downvoted but you’re right. AI slop will never replace the world’s best musicians, artists, writers or actors-but it can definitely replace entry level, unimaginative, stock-footage type stuff. And then the creative arts die from the bottom up. In a few decades the artistic world might look a lot more like how it did centuries ago, with the content makers largely being privileged and connected people because it’s so much harder to work your way up from the bottom.

  • They are mean but I like them and hornets because they kill pests. As long as they’re not making nests in my yard yellow jackets are cool with me.

Bald-faced hornets have a really bad reputation but I had a nest under my roof overhang and they were awesome. Built a beautiful hive and never gave me any trouble even when I walked right below them. There were a couple days last year where invasive June bugs were swarming around my house and I saw a hornet snatch one right out of the air which was pretty badass.

  • Ok, well I wouldn’t call that “grift” to be honest. The video you linked repeatedly says “Sabine is not a charlatan”. I do think she leans into science controversy a bit more than she should, and branches out from where she’s an expert, but those are less serious “crimes”. I also think her gripes about academia are not completely without warrant and I can’t blame her for acquiring a following of people that are trying to use her criticisms to further their own phony conspiracies.

Nah I still don’t get it. Windows PC gamers don’t have to think about compatibility at all right now - every major game release is compatible with windows, apart from some Nintendo exclusives. You dont even have to think about it - when a new game is announced I know I will be able to play it on Windows without jumping through any hoops. Even if it’s a simple check mark for every game it’s still more work, and many games are gonna be blocked because of anti-cheat.

I also think that very few casual phone/tablet gamers are going to be purchasing a dedicated Linux gaming machine that isn’t a daily driver computer. Heck, most Americans don’t even have a desktop nowadays. I don’t think there’s a price out for the steam machine yet but we’re talking over $1000 right? Probably more like $1500 once you factor in peripherals? That’s a TON of money for a casual tablet/phone gamer to drop on something that they won’t also be using as a regular computer.

I guess, but anyone buying a steam machine is gonna have to research the specs anyways, and more exhaustively, check to see if every game they like is supported. I get why open-source enthusiasts are excited about this project and I am to, but in my opinion the cross-section of people who a) aren’t willing to build their own PC or even research different options and b) are willing to daily drive Linux are pretty slim. Especially when they find out they can’t play BF6.
