I know what NASA’s plans are.

But like I said, no billionaire or trillionaire is going to live COMFORTABLY in the moon or Mars anytime soon. In a few centuries? Perhaps. But not in the next 70-100 years.

Hate to break it to you but the NASA base is not going to be some sort of luxury hotel where people can just go. Its going to be a very uncomfortable and cramped scientific laboratory.

I think you are vastly overestimating the possibilities of living outside of earth. I would argue that theres no way in hell for any of the people alive today to be able to live on the moon, Mars or even LEO comfortably. The rich arseholes won’t change the literal paradise the earth is for the hell of Mars. If they manage to make Mars look like the earth, with vast oceans, breathable air and whatnot, sure. But that’s just not going to happen. The trillionaires are not going want to live in a greenhouse, on a desert on Mars.

Fact is, humanity is stuck here for the next few hundred years at a minimum. So yeah, lets eat the rich and use the money they have accumulated to fix the planet. Once we’ve done that, we can look into doing something on Mars.

What makes it a walled garden?

Its a difficult balance to have. No one wants to see anyone killed, but everyone wants to see risks being taken and the drivers wrestling with the machine beasts. Its incredible. But at some point it just gets too dangerous. Like with Group B. The Henri Toivonen interview before his crash is pretty chilling, he explains that the stages are so long, the cars so fast that its impossible to keep concentration for the whole time. Then he sadly proved himself to be correct.

As much as I love Group B, banning it was the correct thing to do. I will never say that the safety aspect has gone too far, but it has made things a bit… boring. I still watch F1, Rally, WEC and I think its awesome. But its different than what it was. Like it wasn’t too long ago when F1 cars looked nervous going on a straight. I vividly remember Mika Häkkinen bombing down the Hockenheimring and the car just wouldn’t keep in a straight line. These days the cars look like they are on rails. I’m gonna stop myself before I start ranting about this years cars.

I say we should help and support them in this project in every possible way. Lets help them get to Mars or Venus. Sound awesome. I would love to read the headline “Elon Musk landed on Mars” and then never have to think about that guy ever again.

It wasn’t just trump saying it. They repeated it many times in the NASA stream before the launch. Regarding moonlanding deniers, they are just gonna misunderstand it on purpose and say “see! They never went to the moon with Apollo! Why would they be saying they have never went so far before!” etc. They are already doing it… >_>

Yeah I kinda cringed on that “god bless america” speech before the launch. Isn’t there 2 Canadians on board and a big part of the Orion was made/designed by ESA? All they got “and our partners around the world” in that speech.

I’m happy that “we” are going back there but this propaganda sillyness is disappointing. I know its always been a part of governments doing space projects, after all I think the only reason “we” are going back there is because the Chinese are going back there. The disappointing thing is that when I was a kid I really thought we would be over ourselves by now, but turns out that seems to be impossible and we are just going back to throwing rocks at each others. Plaaargh.

Anyway. Cool launch, that thing jumped off the pad as if someone kicked it in the nuts. Impressive stuff.

Regarding that economic point of view thinking… I remember reading a World War 1 history book where they mentioned that before the war, every economist was saying that there wont be a war because the world’s economies are so deeply linked, the UK and Germany were doing too much trade…

Economists have been absolute fucking morons about history and how the world works for literal centuries. We really should pull them down from the pedestal they have climbed on, sit them down and tell them to shut the fuck up for a few decades.

Obviously microplastics wont be as bad as asbestos. But since we have kept making our world “safer” with these things, horrible stuff like asbestos wont really be a problem. The consequences will not be as bad, like you said. But I don’t think the point was “what will be as bad as asbestos” but more like “what will be something that we will find out is worse than we first thought” or what will be something that has unintended/unforseen consequences.

Yeah, bad pay leads to shitty work and workers who don’t care about how shitty their work is. How did that old Soviet joke go, “they pretend to pay, we pretend to work.” Something like that.

Yeah its stuff like that that bother me, things that would take 30 seconds to figure out with a basic internet search or reading a few lines of a Wikipedia article. I mean one mistake is not too bad, but if they keep happening, its clear that who ever translated it is not very professional.

No wonder AI is taking their jobs. Sadly.

I don’t mind too much those translation errors that come from things like slang or figure of speech types of things, like “cook it” etc. But when theres a technical word that you could easily look up, its insane to me that the translator decides to just guess what it might be.

My favorite silly translation “error” was when the “The Song Remains The Same” Led Zeppelin film was translated to “Laulu Jää Pystyyn” - “the song stays standing up.” Like why would you even translate that? Its literally a song name, just keep it in the original English. But even further, why would you translate it that way? Why not use “laulu pysyy samana” which would be a direct translation of the song title. I would guess that who ever translated it was old and unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin songs, or something like that. But at least it gave us something to laugh at. And a Finnish band Eppu Normaali did release their own concert film with the title “Laulu Jää Pystyyn.” So that was something.

Depends. I’d say most of them are fine but the issues come when there’s something niche, like technical stuff, local slang words or dialect etc.

I’m a (ex) car mechanic, my dad likes to watch Wheeler Dealers. Quite often I’m visiting when that show is on and so many of the technical terms used are translated completely stupidly. “Brake horsepower” has been translated to “bruttohevosvoima” which means “gross (as in economics) horsepower.” Alternator has been translated to “vaihtaja” which means “changer/switcher.”

There was a Top Gear episode where Clarkson said “a bit squirrely under braking” I understand that as “a bit restless when braking hard” but that was translated to “orava jarrutus” which means “squirrel braking.”

I have more such examples but I’ve forgotten most of them, its been a long while since I’ve watched traditional TV, I mostly download stuff and if I use subtitles (because of audio these days is messed up on purpose), I use English subtitles.
