2·1 day agoI rounded a bit (before I miscalculated), there’s 33.7kWh in a gallon and they use 0.35gal/h on average, so they actually use 11.8kWh just idling

1·1 day agoI mean, it’s a bit disingenuous to use a GW example in relation to the article, when the largest currently in operation is 0.15GW

10·2 days agoIsn’t the largest data center currently something like 100MW? So “only” 0.1GW…65.000 space heaters is still insane though.

131·2 days agoThere’s 33kWh worth of energy in a gallon of gasoline, and they use 0.3gal/hour when idling, so cars are pumping out 11kWh of heat just sitting there…that’s a surprisingly large amount of heat.

3·2 days agoDo you think that tweeking the preconfigured networks would cause conflicts in the long run?
No, none at all. The gl.inet GUI interacts with the underlying system in the exact same way AFAIK, the most common things are just presented with a better/simplified GUI to provide a better UX for non-powerusers.

I don’t know how old you are, but these laser pointers, and the assorted different projection pattern caps, where the bee’s knees when I was a kid.
I hate everything about it

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you effectively backup your high capacity (20+ TB) local NAS?English
10·1 month agoThe key here being that you actually remember the file exists, because it’s important. Some other random spreadsheet you don’t even remember exists because you haven’t needed it since forever is probably not all that important to backup.
If you loose something without ever realizing you lost it, it was not important so there would be no reason to make a backup.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla registrations crash 17% in Europe as BEV market surges 14%English
1·1 month agoThe few things I needed repaired on my model 3 was just fixed by my local mechanic, who also did the yearly brake-maintenance. Once I bought original parts from Tesla and had my own mechanic change it, but they’ve also used 3rd party unoriginal parts they sourced themselves without issues.
I don’t know which model your neighbor has, but for model 3 at least there are lights from 3rd party manufacturers available.

2·1 month agoTo get them repaired you have to take them to an authorised dealer which is basically just them
Meh, not entirely true though. Anything related to “regular” car parts like brakes, suspension etc. can be fixed by any regular mechanic. As for things like handles, you can actually also just order the part from them and have any mechanic change itif you can’t/won’t do it yourself.
Yes there are things you unfortunately would need them for, but most of the things that tend to break or wear out are regular car parts anyone can fix.

2·1 month agoMy experience is from VW/Skoda, Hyundai and volvo…the volvo was by far the worst and an absolute button-hell, it has insanely bad interior design.
I 100% prefer managing settings on a screen where I can get a proper detailed layout and logic representation of functional structure.

My old Pi4 with SSD averaged around 7W, so only 1W lower than my mini PC, but performance and usability of my mini PC is far greater (and it comes with 1tb NVME and 16GB ram). I generally advice against using most SBCs these days unless you specifically need the pin I/O for something.
