So the NVIDIA graphics card is not as big of an issue as it would have been even five years ago. Just use the proprietary drivers. And for my money, Linux Mint is the best distro for beginners, hands-down. You never have to touch the command line and everything just works.

I second this, with the addition that you can also use DistroSea to test-drive distros in your browser. Also, DistroWatch has a search that you can filter by “Beginners” to find some that might be easier.
California is not the center of the universe, but in the US, a fair amount of companies have to tailor their practices to accommodate California law, because A) it’s so weird a lot of the time, and B) California is huge and rich, so there’s a lot of business to be had. It just makes sense to accommodate the outlier. What happens in California has knock-on effects for the rest of the country, and occasionally the rest of the world; case in point, the recent systemd debacle. It’s not certain that they added the age thing in response to the California law specifically, but it was certainly a factor.
Similar but different, we have a kitten and it’s funny to see him trying to figure things out. The other day he just stared at our Keurig when I was making coffee. We don’t use it that often and I guess he hadn’t seen it in action before.
My wife and my cats. We got a kitten a few months after my older cat passed and it turned out to be a really good decision (even though he does drive us crazy sometimes, because kittens are basically toddlers with pointy teeth and claws and a 1-meter vertical leap). Not saying kittens are a cure for depression, but it helps.

9·2 months agoA slightly more positive way of putting this is “choosing the set of problems you want to deal with.” I vastly prefer the problems that Linux hands me over the problems with Windows.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the stupidest thing someone has ever done in front of you?
7·2 months agoI worked in a grocery store deli that made sandwiches, and we’d precut meat “kits” for the popular sandwiches to save time during the lunch rush (like Cuban, Italian, etc). We’d slice them for whole sub sandwiches, and then if someone ordered a half sub, we’d just cut the kits in half and put the other half back in the drawer.
One day, a girl I’ll call “Becky” was working the sandwich counter, and someone ordered a whole Italian sub. There were no whole Italian kits in the drawer, but there were two presliced halves.
It took like three people to explain to Becky how to solve this problem, and even then I’m not sure she ever fully understood.
I live in the general vicinity of Waverly Hills Sanatarium, if that counts. Also one of my friends said she saw a ghost in this old apartment building I used to live in.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s a cheap purchase that’s completely changed your life?
3·2 months agoFitness Adventure Pro for the Switch. Is it an amazing game? No. But it is a fitness game, which means I can get a workout without any equipment to set up and break down, and without having to leave my house. I’ve only been using it a few weeks and I can already feel a difference.

1·2 months agoThe “tastes worse from a press” is entirely dependent on the material of the press you’re using. Garlic reacts with stainless steel, hence those stainless steel “soap bars” they make to remove garlic smell from your hands. I got a zinc press for this exact reason.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you feel content warnings are beneficial?
9·4 months agoJust to head this off at the pass, because someone is bound to bring up exposure therapy: hi, hello, I am someone who has been through exposure therapy (technically Exposure/Response Prevention, or ERP). Yes, it is broadly speaking true that avoiding triggers increases anxiety in the long run. However, one thing that was stressed to me over and over in ERP is that exposures have to be VOLUNTARY to be beneficial. Meaning, just hucking a tarantula at someone with arachnophobia is going to do far more harm than good. Likewise showing them a bunch of pictures of spiders with no warning. However, putting a content warning puts the decision to engage back into the hands of the person with the phobia (or trauma, eating disorder, etc), which effectively turns it into a voluntary exposure should they choose to engage.

I see people recommending Debian but you also said you enjoy tinkering, so I’d recommend SpiralLinux. It’s basically Debian but it uses BTRFS so you can roll back to a previous snapshot if you break something. I don’t think Spiral has updated to Trixie yet so you’d need to manually upgrade but that’s not too big a hassle if you do it immediately.
