The addictiveness of a drug is actually a quantifiable metric. In the early 20th century, scientists exposed hundreds of drug naive individuals to different psychoactive compounds. Although there are individual differences, something like half of the people exposed to intravenous heroin and methamphetamine would actively seek out the next hit.

Games@lemmy.world•PS5 Price increase collapses PlayStation console sales in Japan, with Xbox gainingEnglish
31·1 day ago…the average worker in Africa would need to spend more than a year of wages to buy an Xbox or a PlayStation. Game consoles are in fact luxury goods, we just take them for granted.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do we reduce toxicity on the Fediverse, and on the wider internet?
3·2 days agoIf we block and ban everyone that thinks differently from us, we can create a utopian paradise where everyone thinks the same. This might go on for years-decades maybe-until Elon Musk perfects his Neurolink protocol. At that point we will merge our thoughts, creating the ultimate Unity.
There will be no more hunger, no more pain. Dissent will be unthinkable. We will become…One.

World News@lemmy.world•Iranians form human chains at bridges and power plantsEnglish
8·3 days agoThis is pretty much the only strategy they have. Although their country is one third as populous as the United States, their defense department has less funding than Arkansa’s public education system. Outrage from the America public is their only defense against US military superiority.
It’s a good strategy. I’d be upset if my tax dollars blew up thousands of civilians making a human chain around a powerplant.

World News@lemmy.world•Trump warns a 'whole civilization will die tonight' if a deal with Iran isn't reachedEnglish
663·4 days agoCivilization (noun):The stage of human social and cultural development and organization that is considered most advanced.
The definition Oxford Languages uses is:
“they equated the railroad with progress and civilization”
I hate to say it, but Trump used the correct definition of civilization in regards to his destruction of civilian infrastructure. It doesn’t imply genocide.

Technology@lemmy.world•Group Pushing Age Verification Requirements for AI Turns Out to Be Sneakily Backed by OpenAIEnglish
111·6 days agoI’m pretty sure the vast majority of the people who are anonymous are robots and stealth marketers. Normal people aren’t usually willing to put in the effort to maintain their privacy. They use their “anonymous” social media and AI accounts on devices tied to their verified credentials (Google, Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft, etc.)
My theory is that these companies want identity verification to prevent swarms of bot farms from clogging up their servers. Up until this point, the drawbacks of identity verification outweighed the positives.
Technically, Mary concieved a child with the Holy Spirit, and Jesus is the Holy Spirit who is God.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do I block a community I was banned from?
15·8 days agoLet me reframe my comment. Tell me if you still think it’s trolling. Assume I’m responding to:
“Those woke people are getting what they deserve at the gas pump. They voted for Sleepy Joe Biden, they get what they deserve.”
…I’ve never met a “Woke” person in real life. I know a bunch of Democrats, but not the stereotype obsessed over on social media. It’s reminiscent of the McCarthy era and communism. Everyone talked about communists all day, every day, but they were sooo good at blending in that nobody saw them.
What does “Woke” even refer to? People who think the benefits of diversity outweigh the negatives? People who are annoyed with the people online ranting about the right to life and abortion? If this were the case, then a lot of the Republicans i know are apparently “Woke”.
…if you no longer think I’m trolling, then you just don’t agree with my original opinion.
I haven’t met many people that conform to the MAGA stereotype. It seems to mostly be used as a slur to dehumanize Republicans. I’m a centrist; I’d have made a similar argument if the majority was dehumanizing Democrats.

716·8 days agoProhibition is effective, it’s just that it doesn’t work for easy to manufacture compounds such as alcohol or marijuana. Every known human culture has independently discovered alcohol, and marijuana is a weed that is ready to smoke in its natural form.
As far as social media goes, my country has reached a point where TikTok and Facebook are preinstalled on every phone. If a parent buys their kid a phone and removes them, they will reinstall themselves after an automatic update. When you take into consideration the “streamlined” registration process, one can argue this is a means to target prepubescent children.
…I guess an 8 year old could download a VPN and steal their parents identification, but I feel like some form of prohibition would help.
I find it reassuring that the government is at least acting like they can’t identify this user without Reddit’s consent. I wonder why this charade is necessary; are they trying to set a legal precedent?
