I’m talking about Lemmy / Mbin / Fediverse leftists who celebrate Iran as an opponent to the US and then retcon that the government of Iran must not have legitimate internal opposition. Some of them are probably based in the US as well. I’m not clear on where technocrit is from.
The propaganda that the Iranian government was only being protested because western colonial powers were prompting it is left-wing propaganda. That it also happens to serve the interests of right-wing religious fascists in Iran doesn’t mean it doesn’t also serve the interests of the left.
You may be surprised to learn that the far left support any government, no matter how repressive, if it stands up to the US and “westerners” in general.

Accuracy isn’t valued as much as cheering for the right team. The UAE are bad guys, so any comment disparaging them is good, and any comment “defending” them, even to ask “Wasn’t that the Saudis?”, is bad.
The same mentality gets you downvoted if you don’t like Iran sponsoring terrorists (“The US are the real terrorists”) or if you thought killing Israeli civilians at a concert was uncool (“They’re occupying that land, so they deserve whatever they get”).

I’d be curious where you draw the line. Is it based on income, net worth, or just participation in expensive activities? What sort of trips and activities justify poisoning, and which ones would you let pass?
From the comments I’ve read, people seem concerned with how unimportant labels are, amd that people should be free to label themselves.
The problem here is not what OP wants to call herself or whether there are black and white labels that apply to her situation. The problem is that there are communities based around such labels where people are expected to conform to what the community considers the label to mean. This causes issues because the nature of the community is to include some people and exclude others.
Where “people are fluid” and “labels are arbitrary” causes conflicts is exactly in these kinds of situations where people must fall inside a category in order to participate. The debate about transgender athletes is only a concern because there are sporting events limited to women only. Now you need to decide who is a woman and who is not. TERFs object to people who they categorize as men trying to co-opt the feminist movement.
Take away the requirement to meet others’ definition of who can participate in the group, and you can now accept that people are not always easy to categorize by rigid labels.

I think there’s more nuance. Tankies love Russia and North Korea. If you don’t like those two but you think Venezuela, Iran, and Iran’s proxies are just fine, you may not be a tankie, but you are leaning that way.
