World News@lemmy.world•US World Cup boycotts grow as Trump threatens MexicoEnglish
56·3 months agoI really hope the stadiums are totally empty. We must not repeat the mistakes of the 1936 Olympics. Boycott the world cup and also boycott all their sponsors and advertisers and demand they pull their ads and stop funding FIFA which is a totally corrupt organization.

I think it looks longer because there are not many blank lines. It seems well written but I guess I do slightly get that AI feeling too, it just might be because he/she is a good writer so now people think good writing is AI, sad it’s coming down to this.

6·3 months agoNo need to wait, we can start right now.
One thing we can all do is switch from Microsoft Office (if you or someone you know is using that) to Libreoffice. Especially important that everyone cancels their Office 365 subscriptions. I singled this out because this is likely the way most people are directly funding big tech. Office 365 funds OpenAI which donated $25 million to Trump.
Also of course cancel your Copilot and ChatGPT subscriptions too.
In addition Reddit users should switch to Lemmy or Piefed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft Office has been renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot app”English
19·3 months agoI think it’s time to make a serious push into getting people to boycott Microsoft along with OpenAI. Windows 11 is now a bloated surveillance operating system and Office 365 raised their prices to pay for an AI feature based on OpenAI’s LLMs. OpenAI donated $25 million to Trump.

World News@lemmy.world•China says it cannot accept countries acting as 'world judge' after US captures MaduroEnglish
172·3 months agoI think I know what you’re talking about! The people who pretend to be “far-left”, socialist or communist but for some bizarre reason they keep supporting Russia.
I had an experience with one of those people recently. I asked one of those people point blank do you support Trump and they completely dogged the question. Clicking on profiles of these types of people I notice they also never denounce Trump or Republicans or do so very rarely.
I actually deeply regretfully used to be somewhat of a Trump supporter so now I’m very sensitive to people who may be secretly Trump supporters or those who have similar characteristics. Those “tankie” type people really peg my MAGA-meter. It’s almost like when someone has an abusive ex they tend to notice certain things more afterwards (I wish I could word this sentence better but hopefully people can understand).
Ultimately what makes tankies and MAGA similar even if they are not secretly supporting Trump or a bot is belief persistence when there is contrary and reputable evidence and belief in conspiracy theories. Part of what helped me escape MAGA is media literacy and realizing that if someone presents reputable information that contradicts what I believe, I should change my beliefs not plug my ears and regurgitate conspiracy theories based on some random comment like a screenshot of a screenshot of a 4chan post or just saying nonsense like “I don’t trust the MSM”.

World News@lemmy.world•China says it cannot accept countries acting as 'world judge' after US captures MaduroEnglish
16·3 months agoYou’re getting downvotes but it might be because some people are surprised that Xi Jingping would support Trump but I’ve gathered some evidence it might be true.
For starters we look at TikTok. Regarding TikTok this article is the most damning: https://www.theinformation.com/articles/how-tiktok-courted-conservatives-before-trumps-win (archive/non-paywall: https://archive.is/TUjo9)
The top leaders pushed through content moderation changes that made TikTok more accepting of some conservative views on the fairness of elections or transgender rights, including by updating policies on banned content or enforcing them differently.
I hate the way they worded that. What they really mean is allowing the big lie (false claims the 2020 election was rigged) and transphobia.
See: https://www.theverge.com/politics/656717/trump-tiktok-ban-maga-influencers (archive link: https://archive.is/DMOLf)
MAGA influencers also view TikTok as a relatively reliable platform to publish pro-Trump content without fear that their accounts will get demonetized, restricted, or worse, deactivated.
Also see: https://www.foxnews.com/politics/maga-republicans-defend-tiktok-conservative-platform-fate-hangs-balance-supreme-court (archive link: https://archive.is/RGBC8)
“Trump won the election because he listened to first-time voters like myself and joined TikTok to get his message to us directly,” RNC Youth Advisory Council Chair Brilyn Hollyhand told Fox News Digital of the impending ban.
President Donald Trump “pleaded” with China’s Xi Jinping during a 2019 summit to help his reelection prospects, according to a scathing new book by former Trump adviser John Bolton that accuses the president of being driven by political calculations when making national security decisions.
Then we cannot forget about all the Chinese bots who post online. “China is pushing divisive political messages online using fake U.S. voters” https://www.npr.org/2024/09/03/nx-s1-5096151/china-tiktok-x-fake-voters-influence-campaign Says it very clearly. They used the same strategy Russia did.

World News@lemmy.world•Heritage Foundation openly calls for end of European UnionEnglish
0·4 months agoI strongly oppose this and think it’s a bad idea because then you’ll be like Ukraine and your neighbors like Russia. Instead we must win big in all 50 states. Otherwise you’ll screw over tens if not hundreds of millions of people who will be forced to live in a a far-right extremist country. Let’s instead take back our country in all 50 states.
Another reason why this is a bad idea is because blue states send a lot of good Democrats to congress. Taking that away means certain Republican domination in congress.

I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he’s causing people to rightfully boycott the US.
Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I’m really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•HDMI Forum is unwilling to disclose the 2.1 specification for open-source (Linux): according to AMD, they had submitted a functional, HDMI 2.1-compatible driver [for linux?], which the Forum rejected.English
551·4 months agoIf you want change you got to direct your comments to the HDMI forum. Here we can talk about it forever and if they never see anything they won’t change. I sent the following email to: admin@hdmiforum.org
Dear HDMI Forum,
I was recently saw the news that the HDMI forum was blocking open source implementations of the HDMI 2.1 specifications and I want to express that I really believe this is a bad idea. I hope the HDMI Forum will consider allowing it. I can’t say I understand what the concern is or the reason for blocking it but I really doubt that whatever issue is envisioned will actually come to fruition, instead I believe that allowing open source implementations will be beneficial for adoption of the standard and since if I understand correctly the licensing fees are based on hardware sold so having open source code will of course not exempt anyone from HDMI licensing rules.
Thank you so much for your consideration,
(Name)
Maybe it’s not perfect (I already wished I worded one sentence better) but I think what matters most is just trying your best and using your voice whenever you can. Be sure to send your email too, the more they receive hopefully the higher the chances that this works but of course be sure to use your own wording, I just put that here for an example.

I remember Brave was popular among MAGA-type people during Trump’s first term. I suspect it’s likely the same.
The logo has a striking resemblance to one I remember seeing on a big pro-Trump community. It’s described here https://www.vox.com/2019/8/29/20838289/trump-fascist-lion-head-bull-testicles-video-twitter basically the logo is associated with Mussolini.
In addition if you check the Wikipedia article you’ll notice this:
Moreover some right-wing type people expressed their “solidarity” with Brendan Eich for his anti LGBT stance so they used Brave.
